December 2023 Newsletter

Thank you for being part of our 2023

As we reach the end of another year, we want to take this opportunity to say thank you for being part of our community and YMCA family.

Whether you’ve been dashing around our soft play, studying hard in our Discovery College, working out in our gym, or having a blast in our Holiday Clubs – thank you for being part of it.

Being part of YMCA Plymouth is being part of something bigger. As an independent local charity, we’re all about the power of community – being by our Plymouth community, for our Plymouth community.

Free nutrition workshops coming soon to our YMCA

It’s that time of year again after the Christmas indulgence is over and we start making those January diet goals.

We all know being mindful of what we eat is key to a healthy lifestyle, but knowing how to achieve the right balance for you and how to make the right choices isn’t always easy.

To help demystify all the diet info you may have heard and learn how to make positive, lasting changes, we’re delighted to be hosting Em-Powered Nutrition at our centre this January for a series of FREE workshops.

The workshops will cover everything from busting some common nutrition myths to learning about the role of vitamins & minerals, as well as supporting your body through the perimenopause and beyond.

Sign-up for our next Discovery College open day

As Year 11s start to make their post-16 choices, our Discovery College team will be hosting their next Open Day on Thursday 8th February. If you know a young person still making their mind up about what to do next year, then tell them to get registered and come along to discover what we offer.

At Discovery College, we pride ourselves on being a smaller, close-knit college. We’re free from the formalities of a school, while also being on a scale where students don’t get lost in the crowd, so we are always there to support them with their needs.

Our amazing teaching staff and community links offer a unique environment for young people to develop academically and personally.

The fun and practical vocational courses, alongside unique opportunities like our My Future Mentoring programme, ensure that our students succeed in their journeys.

Come to our open day to see what it’s all about and learn about our courses in; Business, Childcare, Travel & Tourism, Protective Services, Sport and Health & Social Care.

Help for our community  & warm space open throughout the winter

As with every year, we distributed thousands of pounds of food and material aid to our community this December.

Our Discovery College team made a huge number of hampers for local families and our students got involved in making shoeboxes containing essentials for those who are homeless.

We also hosted our annual Christmas get-together with our Y’s Group, helping to support people who may be lonely and isolated at this time of year.

Plus, our Every Man Matters mental health group was there for those who may be struggling and need someone to chat with.

We’re continuing to support people who may be struggling this winter with our Bistro being freely open as a warm space on Fridays 5.30pm – 7.30pm*. In the Bistro you’ll find free soup and other refreshments, games and some friendly faces from our Bill’s Boys Bistro team. No donation is required and everyone is welcome.

Please click below to share the post about our warm space and help spread the word.
