Centre Update – 2nd November 2020

Dear Fitness Members,

With the recent government announcement regarding the new national restrictions, sadly our centre will be closed for classes, gym and sports rentals from Thursday 5nd November until Wednesday 2nd December. We will reopen as usual on Wednesday 2nd December.

As you will be aware, YMCA Plymouth is more than just a gym. Therefore, our centre will remain open to provide education and support to our vulnerable young people and our community. Because of this, we are asking our gym/class members to consider supporting us throughout the 4-week lockdown by retaining your fitness package. During the last lockdown, we provided a range of services to local people. Your continued support will allow us to make this happen again. You can see details of this here.

In return for continuing your fitness membership/package, we will be offering all our fitness team’s online workout videos on our website to help you continue working out at home-on demand (details to follow shortly).

Furthermore, if you continue your membership/package we will offer you a choice of two benefits which you can claim, if you wish to do so when we return:

  1. A complementary group personal training session and free 1-hour badminton court hire.
  2. Credit the value of your fitness membership/package against your annual YMCA Membership fee. For example, next time your £25 annual membership is due for renewal, we will deduct the price of one month of your fitness package from this. (i.e. £18 gym only members, will only pay £7 on their Annual YMCA Membership fee when renewed instead of £25. Higher priced memberships have the whole fee deducted and receive further credit.)

Safety Measures & Centre Guidelines

Booking Classes & Gym Sessions

New Guidance Clarification for Centre Users:

Face Coverings

We have revised our policy on face coverings and are asking all users from Monday 5th October to please wear one when walking through communal areas of the centre, unless you have a valid exception. Coverings can then be removed once in the Gym, Sports Hall or Studios.

Group Fitness Classes

Sessions will continue as normal under our Covid-secure measures. Under the latest guidance, organised indoor exercise classes for adults are still allowed in groups larger than six provided that individuals are social distanced and safety measures are in place. However, you must not arrive or mingle in a social group (ie. with friends or family) larger than six.

Therefore, classes will continue to run as usual and users are asked to please follow our safety measures found here: https://www.ymcaplymouth.org.uk/safe/

At peak times you may have to queue outside the facility in order to social distance. Therefore, we ask you to please arrive at the time of your session. Given our lovely British weather, we recommend that you bring your brolly in case of rain. We will be making check-in as quick as possible, but we do apologise for any wait. Once inside and working hard, we guarantee you’ll soon warm up!


There are no changes to the measures around the gym. All users are required to observe social distancing and follow our measures such as cleaning equipment after use and booking online and arriving at the time of their session.

Once again, we apologise for any queuing at peak times, we will do our best to minimise this as much as possible. Be sure to check the weather and bring an umbrella just in case.

Sports Activities

Team Sports for over 18s will no longer be able to take place for groups more than six. Only organised sport for certain sports subject to governing body guidelines may be able to take place provided that groups do not mix. Supervised sport for under 18s can still go ahead.

Test & Trace

All gym & class users are required to provide contact details when booking or joining as a member, we simply ask you to check-in as usual when you visit the centre with your membership card our via the MemberMe+ app on your phone.

If you are entering the facility as part of a group for a sport activity, the lead person of your group must leave their details and check-in with reception.

Alternatively, users can also scan the available NHS Test & Trace QR codes available around the facility with the NHS Test & Trace mobile App.
