Armed Forces Covenant

YMCA Plymouth & Discovery College are part of the Armed Forces Covenant

If you are part of the Armed Forces community we can offer work experience opportunities to the Wounded, Injured and Sick. As well as providing concessionary access to our leisure and sports facilities, discount on our gym membership and much more!

We recognised those who serve our country and it’s an honour for YMCA Plymouth and Discovery College to be part of the armed forces covenant. We are committed to uphold the key principles and recognise that ‘The members of the Armed Forces Community should not face disadvantages arising from their service in the provision of public and commercial services. In some circumstances special provision may be justified especially for those who have given the most, such as the injured or bereaved’.

Our Pledges

Employment support to members of the Armed Forces Community

‣  We will offer work experience and guaranteed interview schemes to Veterans seeking employment.

‣ We will offer additional leave to Cadet Force Adult Volunteers to help them carry out training.


‣ Engage with theCareer Transition Partnership.


‣ We can provide work experience opportunities to the Wounded, Injured and Sick.


‣ Offer opportunities at Board / Trustee level to help shape YMCA & Discovery College strategic 
direction – we currently have a ex-service member on YMCA Board of Trustee.

Communications, engagement and outreach


‣ We will Support or promote Armed Forces events, such as Armed Forces day annually on Plymouth Hoe, the Poppy Appeal and Remembrance activities.

 ‣ Appoint an Armed Forces Champion (Health & Wellbeing Ambassador) within YMCA’s
organisation to act as a focal point for supporting our Armed Forces staff and Community.

 ‣ YMCA and Discovery College will engage with any local Armed Forces presence, such as local Army units, reservist units, RAF stations and naval bases (i.e. HMNB Devonport / HMS Drake).

‣ Develop relationships and work collaboratively with other organisations supporting the Covenant and the Armed Forces Community within Plymouth (i.e. Plymouth City Council).

Commercial

‣ YMCA will offer commercial discounts for Armed Forces Community via the Defence Discount Service, such as concessionary gym memberships.

‣ Waive cancellation fees for armed forces members who get posted overseas, or to areas outside YMCA service provision.

 ‣ Ensure the Armed Forces Community has fair access to YMCA services and is not put at a disadvantage by their service, for example as a result of their high mobility.

Health

‣ YMCA will offer free access to their facilities for staff members and volunteers from the
armed forces who support our organisation

‣ YMCA will offer concessionary access to our leisure and sports facilities for members of the

Armed Forces Community (i.e. Gym Memberships).

Education

‣ Discovery College will allocate Post-16 college places in advance of families arriving in Plymouth following the standard college recruitment process (interview / tour etc.)

 ‣ Discovery College will continue to offer and promote their post-16 Public Service courses,
highlighting career routes and opportunities within the Armed Forces

 ‣ Promote training and further/higher education opportunities for Service leavers, ex-Service personnel and their families.

Civic responsibilities

‣ Both YMCA Staff and Discovery College students will pledge to promote and take part in remembrance, armed forces day (annually on Plymouth Hoe) and other armed forces
ceremonial activities.

What is the Armed Forces Covenant?

The Armed Forces Covenant is a pledges that we promise to recognise the fair and respectful treatment to those who serve or have served in the Armed Forces, as well as their families, in the communities, economy, and society they dedicate their lives to serving.
