December 2021 Newsletter

Thank you for another year

It has been a transformative year for our centre, as well as a challenging one for many people in our community. We’re grateful to each and person who has been part of what we do in 2021. Thank you for sticking with us – or joining with us if you’re new! Your support has meant that we can continue to be there for you and for those in our community who need our help the most. As one of our students once said, at YMCA Plymouth you can ‘be part of something bigger.’ Whenever we look back on a year it’s easy to see what that means.

Here’s a quick video of a few highlights from 2021: Watch Now

Over 2,000kg of food aid given to local people

The past year has unfortunately seen a huge rise in food poverty within our community and over the last 12 months we have stepped up our efforts to support those in need.

Some of our initiatives have included; a free breakfast club for young people, fresh produce donated from our garden, food hamper & voucher deliveries, as well running a festive meal for isolated elderly residents.

Our garden project was also recently featured on Plymouth Live, click here to find out more.

Family-run cafe opening at our centre this January

An exciting new bistro is opening at our centre, with the old coffee bar area undergoing an entire refurbishment.

Bill’s Boys Bistro will be open at our centre this January, serving up a brand-new menu that’s complete with great tasting freshly prepared food, sourced from local suppliers. The new space will become a full-fledged members area in the evenings and student canteen during the day. Be sure to head upstairs from reception and take a look at the amazing new changes!

New beginners cycle class + bring a friend to any fitness class for free!

With the new year comes a brand-new class timetable and with it a new gentle cycle class. Easy Ride is an indoor cycle class that’s ideal for newcomers or for anyone just looking for a less intense session. Find out more about this class and the rest of our new timetable here.

Free class offer for new customers

We have some exclusive voucher books available at reception for new customers to try any class for free! Please pick up a book and give one to a friend this January – they’ll have no excuse not to make that resolution happen.

These vouchers can also be used to try THE TRIP for free if you’ve not yet already tried it, or any regular class if you’ve not tried a class before.

Ask at reception and get one before they’re all gone!

Meet the new President of YMCA Plymouth

We are proud to introduce our new honorary President, Polar Explorer, Jim McNeill.

Jim is an inspiring individual from a humble background, who has led an extraordinary life as a respected polar explorer. His role as President will see him act as an ambassador and figurehead for our charity.

Find out more about him and why he decided to take up the role here on our website.

Join an Open Day at Discovery College

Many young people will now be considering their post-16 options for the start of September 2022 and our Discovery College has an Open Evening from 4.30pm – 6pm on Wednesday 26th January.

The evening is a great opportunity for those currently in Year 11 that are thinking about their next steps and want to learn more about our vocational courses.
