YMCA Plymouth is proud to introduce our new President, polar explorer and inspirational speaker, Jim McNeill.
The role of President will see Jim act as an ambassador and figurehead for our work supporting the local community in the areas of education, health and families.
Jim has over 36 years of experience travelling and working in the polar regions, including for numerous Film and TV productions, such as the BBC’s Frozen Planet and Marvel’s Captain America. Since 2001 Jim has run ‘The Ice Warrior Project’ from his base on Dartmoor, training ordinary people from all walks of life to undertake purposeful expeditions that make a significant contribution to our knowledge of the Arctic.
Tom Lavis, CEO of YMCA Plymouth said: “We are delighted that Jim has chosen to take up this position with us. He will be a great ambassador for what we do and is a truly inspiring role model for those we serve. Through his personal achievements and wider work, he encapsulates our ethos of supporting our community and helping people to realise their full potential.”
As a self-described “naughty schoolboy”, Jim found himself disillusioned with education and unsure about his path in life. Fortunately, Jim found his calling through physical activities such as climbing and other outdoor pursuits. Since then, he’s had a varied career, taking him through environmental science, the Army, marketing and the fire service, whilst pursuing his passion for exploration.
Commenting on his appointment to President at YMCA Plymouth, Jim said: “I love what YMCA Plymouth does, I think it’s amazing; especially its work helping young people through its education and youth services. I’ve delivered outward bound training for young people in my career and seen first-hand the positive impact that providing support beyond traditional education can make on young people’s lives.”
“I’m looking forward to being an ambassador for the charity and I hope my story and background can be inspiring for others. I always say that if I can do these things, anyone can.”
