Young people matched with magnificent mentors from top Plymouth businesses

The My Future youth mentoring programme has now fully started, with our mentors being matched with their student mentees from our Discovery College. The programme seeks to raise the aspirations of our young people and help guide them into their next steps, by linking them with passionate and inspiring mentors from businesses across the city.

Students and mentors have been overwhelmingly positive about their first meetings, with students already talking about the great insights and motivation they are getting from the time with their mentors.

Grey weather getting you down? Try a fitness class at YMCA!

As the longer nights begin to close in and the summer holidays feel like a distant memory, it can be a time of year when we all need to look at what we can do to give ourselves a little boost.

Exercise has been proven to be one of the best mood enhancers, yet finding the motivation to start or re-start can often be tricky. Group fitness classes are a great way to get into a new fitness routine and at YMCA we pride ourselves on offering a huge variety of classes led by top instructors – whilst being one of the most friendly and welcoming centres you can find.

If you’re interested in trying a class and shedding the Autumn blues, then why not check out our timetable and get booked into a class today!

Over 65s group goes to the movies!

Our Over 65s Y’s Group have been out and about again on one of their monthly activities.

The group, alongside our student volunteers from Discovery College, went to the cinema this month to see Mrs Harris Goes to Paris. Many of the group hadn’t been to the cinema since the 90s and thoroughly enjoyed the day, which was kindly sponsored thanks to local IT company Rowe.

New to the group was 82-year-old Vince, who sadly lost his wife last year and is looking to keep himself active and healthy by joining the group.

The Y’s Group provides support to over 65s who may feel lonely or isolated with free social activities each month.

Ocean City Soft Play officially opens at YMCA!

We have been delighted this week to welcome families to our brand-new Ocean City Soft Play area located downstairs from our main reception. The new space hosts a two-tier play area for toddlers complete with slides, spinners, a tunnel and lots more. The area is based around Plymouth landmarks so kids can splash into Tinside lido, climb across the Brunel Bridge or dive into the Plymouth sound. There is also a Plymouth Hoe-themed babies area and the ability to order snacks and drinks from Bill’s Boys Bistro by scanning a QR code on the tables.

We’re also delighted to announce that our popular ‘Stay & Play’ themed sessions led by our childcare team, with craft and messy play activities, will be returning next week in the new area. These sessions will be available on Thursdays at 9.30am and 11.30am.
