Young people from Discovery College celebrate success after a difficult year

Despite a challenging few months, over 100 students from our Discovery College have been celebrating another successful year after receiving their results during unprecedented circumstances.

We are very proud our young people, who after much turmoil got their BTEC and GCSE results in a number of courses, including; Business, Public Services, Health & Social Care, Sport, Travel & Tourism and Childcare.

Students received their results via email and while there are still ongoing delays with some results, many students have achieved their expected grades to land a place at their chosen University.

For those who didn’t get their expected results, the Discovery College team have been on hand to support students and help guide them with their next steps. The college has also recently partnered with the Plymouth City Council Skills Launchpad – a great resource for local young people looking for skills and employment guidance.

YMCA Football Clubs kick-off again after lockdown hiatus

Players from the YMCA All Saints FC teams have been back on the training ground this month ,with many youth teams in action.

Head Coach Barry Sellers said, “We’re very pleased to be on the pitch after such a long time – despite the recent thunderstorms threatening our sessions. All our young people have shown great enthusiasm and effort and it’s great to have them back.”

One parent said: “My daughter couldn’t wait to be back with her U8s team, she has been practising in the garden over lockdown but was really excited to be training properly with her team again this week.”

Harvest from the YMCA garden delivered to local food poverty charity

The first crop from our community garden was delivered this month to Provide Devon, a local charity who supply emergency food parcels to those in need. The initial crop included tomatoes, runner beans, apples and courgettes; the result of much labour from many volunteers over the summer.

Ayshea Cross, Charity Manager from Provide Devon said: “We’re very thankful for the marvellous donation of fruit and veg. The garden is a great way for the community to get involved in the whole process from ‘plant to plate’ and especially to those who really need it at this time.”

Back to being active again!

This month has seen YMCA Plymouth open its doors after more than 4 months, and it’s been exciting to see hundreds of people get back to being active! The whole YMCA team would like to thank all of our members for abiding by our new way of operating and bearing with us as we keep our centre safe for everyone.

It has been great to see so many returning members, as well as new ones, joining our new socially distanced fitness classes in the sports hall, as well those making use of our new socially-distanced gym. Sports clubs have also been returning with volleyball training sessions, badminton clubs and more being back in full swing.

Preparing for a new year at Discovery College

After a long time outside of the classroom, the Discovery College team is looking forward to welcoming returning students and new ones for the new academic year in September.

Much preparation has been underway to ensure the college is a secure and safe place for students to learn. Among the new measures include a dedicated student entrance, as well as dedicated toilets and one-way-system.

After a tumultuous year for school-leavers, we would like to assure any young people still undecided about their post-16 options that Discovery College is still accepting applications to start in September for our Level 2 & 3 vocational courses – so it’s not too late to apply!
