Laura’s not stopping in her effort to support YMCA mental health work

Is it a bird, or is it a plane? No, it’s just Laura Webber speeding away yet again on another sponsored run in aid of our mental health work!

You may remember recently we thanked our gym member, Laura, for her efforts in completing the London Marathon and Plymouth Half Marathon in aid of our work. But those runs are just the tip of the iceberg for Laura, who is still relentlessly running until the end of the year – including four ultra-marathons.

Laura’s close friend Jack tragically took his own life in 2020, so she wanted to run in his memory and support mental health services like our Every Man Matters group – set up for men struggling with their mental health. Sadly, suicide is the leading cause of death for men under 35. Groups such as ours aim to play a small part in changing that statistic.

Laura is now nearing her fundraising goal and is hoping to smash it! So if you can, please sponsor her effort and help support our services.

To mark International Women in Engineering Day, YMCA Plymouth along with Tamar Crossings, Babcock and VolkerSteven / VolkerLaser ran a big event at the Tamar Bridge for girls from local schools to come along and learn about STEM careers.

Over 250 girls embarked on an eye-opening tour of the Tamar Bridge, had inspiring talks from local women engineers and engaged in a variety of hands-on activities led by local employers and training providers.

If you or your child want to know about local engineering opportunities and pathways, check out our free guide here.

Discovery College at Armed Forces Day 2023

Students and staff from our Discovery College were up on the Hoe last week for Armed Forces Day 2023.

YMCA Plymouth has a long history of supporting the armed forces, and many Discovery College students progress into careers within the forces after their studies with us. Our Public Services and Uniformed Services courses in particular offer fantastic pathways to the forces. Students and staff were busy all day talking to people about our range of vocational courses offered to 16-19s.

It’s not too late to still apply for our September enrolment. Visit our website to find out more.

Our Y’s Group enjoys a day at the dockyard

Our monthly support group for over-65s, which helps combat loneliness, was treated to an exclusive tour and afternoon tea at Devonport Dockyard this month, thanks to the kind support of Babcock!

With half of the group being former dockyard employees, it was a trip down memory lane for many as well as an eye-opening experience seeing the latest developments. After the tour, the crew had afternoon tea in the Officer’s Mess with the Naval Base Commander
